Cherry, Deer River to clash in Section 7A boys basketball championship

On Wednesday both the Cherry and Deer River boys basketball teams earned Section 7A semifinal wins at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s (UMD) Romano Gym to advance to the title game.
Top-seeded Cherry held off fourth seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl 86-80 thanks to a 43 point performance from Isaac Asuma. The Rangers, led by Asher Zubich with 33 points, finish their season 21-8.
Later third seeded Deer River rallied from an 18 point deficit to defeat second seeded North Woods 66-62. Ty Morrison led the Warriors to victory with 19 points, while TJ Chiabotti led the Grizzlies with 13 points. North Woods closes out their season 24-5.
Cherry (25-4) will make their first section title game appearance since the 2012-2013 season on Friday. They’ll tip-off against Deer River (23-6) hunting for back-to-back section championships at 7pm at Romano Gym.
