Coach Masterson & daughter now hold ’98, ’21 Proctor girls soccer section titles

The Proctor girls soccer team has won a section title just three times. The first came in 1998, then they repeated as champions in 1999, and finally this Tuesday they added another in 2021.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Tangen scored the game winner leading the Rails to state, just like her mother, head coach Amy Masterson, had before her.
"Knowing that my mom went to state and that she scored, and knowing that this was the game to get to state and that I scored in that moment, I was like oh my gosh I did it," Tangen said.
Recalling the moment Tuesday night at Esko School Fields, Masterson added, "it is surreal. It is an unbelievable feeling, I’m proud of her for stepping up. I have always joked about, I said ‘I made it to state how about you?’ and now she can say the same thing."
A Rails standout in ’98, Masterson brought Proctor to the Metrodome for the first time in program history. Then in this year’s Section 7A final Tangen scored the sole goal lifting her team to a 1-0 victory over Legacy Christian Academy to clinch their first state berth in over two decades.

"I’ve always looked up to my mom. She was an amazing, she still is, but she was an amazing soccer player and to just know that I’m following in her footsteps is kind of awesome," Tangen said.
The Rails and their mother-daughter duo will kick off Class A state action October 26. Pairing and match locations are set to be released this weekend.
