Complaint: Suspect in crime spree told detective he had used meth

A suspect in a Twin Ports crime spree that culminated in an hours-long standoff later told a detective he had been using methemphetamine, according to a second criminal complaint filed in the case.

On Wednesday, five felony charges were filed against 30-year-old Cody Lee Walker-Nelson in Douglas County Circuit Court for crimes allegedly committed in Wisconsin. The new charges include attempted robbery of a financial institution, burglary, theft, and second-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Walker-Nelson, who is listed as having an address in Superior’s East End neighborhood in the latest complaint, was already facing 21 charges in Minnesota connected to the Oct. 1 incidents.

The Douglas County complaint says a detective interviewed Walker-Nelson on Oct. 5 at the St. Louis County Jail. According to the complaint, Walker-Nelson said "he had been up for days and was using methamphetamine."

Walker-Nelson said he had been looking for guns for the purpose of killing himself and recalled stealing numerous guns from a home, according to the complaint. The document goes on to say that Walker-Nelson confirmed that a surveillance photo of an attempted bank robbery showed him holding a gun that he had stolen from the home.

Walker-Nelson is also accused of driving the wrong way on the Bong Bridge. St. Louis County prosecutors allege he also stole multiple vehicles and led police on two separate chases before holding authorities in an hours-long standoff in West Duluth, among other things.

He continues to be held in St. Louis County Jail.
