The 170th nine day Wisconsin firearms deer season opens on Saturday. While it’s fun to hit the woods with friends the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to always stay focused on their firearm.

"Do not ever go up in a tree stand with a loaded gun or come out of it. That’s some of our major fatalities of people exiting and entering their tree stands with loaded firearms," Greg Kessler said, a Wisconsin DNR Wildlife Biologist.

Along with that advice Kessler warned about thin ice in wetland areas. He stated that ice will not be frozen enough to walk across in many areas of Wisconsin by this weekend.

For anyone interested in getting involved in the firearms deer season, liscences are available for purchase online through the DNR’s website.
