City leaders marked the completion of improvements to a West Duluth trail with a ribbon cutting and a bike ride on Tuesday.
The city describes the Duluth, Winnipeg, and Pacific (DWP) Trail as "a true Midwest mountain multi-use trail experience." It runs along a former railroad grade above the Munger Trail, including an adventurous stretch through a tunnel under Ely’s Peak and spectacular overlooks of the Gary-New Duluth, Riverside, and Smithville neighborhoods.
Work included construction of a dedicated trailhead on Becks Road, removing fallen rocks from the tunnel and rock cuts along the trail, improvements to grading and stormwater management, and new signs. The project was funded by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Regional Trail Grant Program, Federal Recreational Trail Program, Parks and Trails Legacy Grant Program, and tourism tax funds.
Fall is a particularly good time to visit the trail to view fall colors in the St. Louis River valley below!
