Losing daylight after summer solstice

The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Day length depends on latitude with higher latitudes receiving greater daylight hours. Duluth receives 15 hours 52 minutes of daylight on June 20, the summer solstice of 2022.

Daylight hours decrease until the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice. The winter solstice of 2022 will be December 21 with 8 hours 32 minutes of daylight for Duluth.

The rate at which daylight changes is the slowest near the solstices and the greatest near the equinoxes. Duluth only loses 4 seconds of daylight from June 20 to June 21 in 2022. The rate of daylight loss will increase until the fall equinox when the change in daylight will be around 3 minutes 18 seconds. The rate of change will then decrease until the winter solstice.
