A Duluth man is in jail after being shot in an officer-involved shooting overnight. Authorities say the man’s injury is not life-threatening.
The incident happened at about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in the Morgan Park neighborhood.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating suspicious activity when they attempted to stop an ATV with two male passengers in a wooded area. The BCA says the two men fled on the ATV with the deputies in pursuit.
At about 2:30 a.m., a K9 deputy located the men in a nearby wooded area. The BCA says one of the deputies discharged their weapon, striking and injuring one of the men.
The 29-year-old man was provided medical aid at the scene and then taken to a hospital for further treatment. He was later released into custody and booked into the St. Louis County Jail.
The man is expected to face charges of fleeing and obstruction with force. The other person on the ATV was questioned and released.
Authorities did not release any information about the incident until 14 hours after happened.
It was not immediately announced whether the deputy is still on duty, or why the sheriff’s office was conducting an investigation in the Duluth Police Department’s jurisdiction.
The BCA said there is no squad camera footage of the incident and St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputies do not wear body cameras. It said more information will be released once initial interviews have been completed.
