Memorial Day observances were held at Greenwood Cemetery in Superior Monday morning.
Despite being hit with raining weather, Superior Mayor Jim Paine said it was important that the event went on.
“It’s easy to imagine that today is about the deaths of these people that have served our country and it’s not,” stated Mayor Paine. “It’s about the lives that they lived and the sacrifice they gave from the very moment they chose to serve. Here’s where you stand right now. It’s difficult to read the names on these stones. From even a short distance away they lose their identities—they fade into a greater symbol of something far more important than any one of us.”
Later in his address, Mayor Paine specifically gave thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
