The Wisconsin firearms deer season opens tomorrow. If you’re lucky enough to bag a buck, you should make plans to process it ahead of time.
"In recent years we’ve lost most of our local processors in Douglas Bayfield county. We really only have one or two left in the area, so hunters should plan ahead for what they’re going to do with their deer. Potentially start processing their own at home, there’s lots of guides online they can look up," says Wisconsin DNR Wildlife Biologist, Greg Kessler.
Kessler also stated that there’s just two local shops left in this region, Hursh Meat Processing in Poplar and Pearce’s Sausage Kitchen in Ashland. He state it’s primarily because owners are retiring and no new shops are cropping up.
