The Superior City Council voted Tuesday night to create a tourism commission.

It means 70 percent of funds generated from the hotel/motel room tax will go to the six-member commission for use to promote tourism in Superior. Currently, that money goes to Travel Superior.

Travel Superior has opposed the change.

The vote was 6-4 in Tuesday’s night’s special Committee of the Whole meeting.

The mayor says the tourism commission format will allow Superior to get bids for tourism marketing. The commission could still choose to award a contract to Travel Superior, which said at this point, it plans to submit a proposal.
