Superior snow emergency route remains in place
While Duluth rolls out its new snow emergency system, Superior has had a snow emergency route in place for years to keep traffic on Highway 2/53 moving during major winter storms.
The route is used when crews determine they are unable to maintain Highway 2/53, also known as East 2nd Street, in the area near the harbor due to wind and snow accumulation. The route connects Highway 2/53 at the southeastern city limits to the Blatnik Bridge.
The snow emergency route travels along:
- East 2nd Street from the city limits north to 31st Ave East
- 31st Ave East west to E 5th Street
- East 5th Street north to 18th Avenue East
- 18th Avenue East west to North 28th Street
- North 28th Street west to Hammond Avenue
- Hammond Avenue north to North 5th Street (base of the Blatnik Bridge)
When a snow emergency is declared, no parking is allowed along either side of roads on the snow emergency route.
Superior residents can sign up to receive notifications about snow emergencies via text alert and/or email through the city website. Snow emergency notifications are sent out through the "News Alert" subscription, which also includes messages about street closures, detouris, changes to trash collection schedules, and holiday closures.
