Trudeau keeps job but doesn’t get majority

Canadians have given Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party a victory in parliamentary elections.

However, his gamble to win the majority of seats appears to have failed, leaving Trudeau where he started: forced to partner with other parties to pass legislation.

The 49-year-old Trudeau channeled the star power of his father, the Liberal icon and late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, when he first won election in 2015 and now appears to have led his party to the top finish in two elections since.

Trudeau bet Canadians didn’t want a Conservative government during a pandemic. Opponents questioned the wisdom of calling an election during a pandemic.

Results Monday evening showed that Conservative candidates won a majority of votes nationwide but the Liberals won a larger number of seats.
