Two Harbors voters are challenging their mayor with a petition to have him recalled from office.
The Recall or Resign Committee aims to have Mayor Chris Swanson removed from office. They claim the mayor has engaged in business endeavors that are a conflict of interest.
Chair of the committee Todd Roning says,"We are exercising our rights to bring this to the voters to decide is if the mayor should remain in office or not."
In the charter city of Two Harbors the committee needs to acquire 20% of voters to sign the petition, which would be around 450 signatures. From there a special election can be held where voters could vote on the issue.
"We didn’t elect him mayor to leverage that mayoral title for the benefit of his businesses”, says Ronning.
The recently created Facebook page Resign or Recall, created by the challengers, lists what they believe are the conflicts of interest.
We reached out to Mayor Swanson for comment but we have not heard back. He has told the Duluth News Tribune that he believes city policy forbids him from speaking to the media.
Swanson’s term ends in 2025.
