Two killed, four injured in crash west of Thunder Bay
Ontario Provincial Police say two people died and four people were injured when a tractor-trailer unit collided with a pickup truck pulling a fifth-wheel trailer west of Thunder Bay.
The crash happened on Saturday night at the intersection of Highway 11-17 (the Trans Canada Highway) and Highway 102, known as Sistonen’s Corner. The OPP says a westbound tractor trailer on Highway 102 struck the pickup, which was eastbound on Highway 11-17.
A passenger in the tracter-trailer unit, 38-year-old Ahmed Omer of Calgary, Alberta, died at the scene of the crash. The tractor-trailer’s driver, 38-year-old Parmohit Chaudhary of Acton, Ontario, was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The OPP says four occupants of the pickup truck suffered injuries that are serious but not life-threatening. One passenger, a six-year-old, was flown to London, Ontario, for further evaluation.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are investigating the cause of the collision.
Highway 11-17 was closed for more than 16 hours following the crash and reopened on Sunday afternoon. Traffic was rerouted onto Highway 102 during the closure.
