UMD football’s home opening upset fueled by record setting crowd

Last Saturday a record setting crowd of 6,536 strong cheered on the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) football team as they downed Minnesota State University, Mankato 30-10 for their home opener.

The Bulldogs said it was their fans at Malosky Stadium that sparked the then-number 20 ranked ‘Dogs upset victory over the then-third ranked Mavericks

"The crowd was unreal. I hope we can have a crowd like that every home game," senior tight end Zach Ojile said. "Definitely the most memorable home game that I’ll ever have."

Fifth year defensive lineman Dan Monson added, "the energy was great. I’ve been here for six years, that’s the best crowd I’ve ever seen by far. We feed off that, we feed off each other, we feed off the crowd and that was a great night."

The crowd’s roars fueled UMD defensively, as they held the Mavericks to just 247 yards of total offense and zero points in the second quarter.

Head coach Curt Wiese said the team celebrated on Saturday, but now it’s all eyes on their next opponent: Winona State University.

Now number 13 UMD will look to repeat their strong defensive effort in a fight to stay unbeaten against the also 2-0 Warriors on the road on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1pm. For their full schedule, click here.
