Both the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s and women’s hockey programs hit the ice for the first time over weekend and their strong outings earned them top ten spots in the latest rankings.
After a split series at Minnesota State University-Mankato, the Bulldog women have taken over the number 7 spot in Monday’s USCHO.com poll. They entered their season opener ranked 6th in the nation.
Meanwhile the Bulldog men, riding an 4-2 exhibition win over the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Sunday, moved up one spot to number 5 in their latest rankings. They’ll work to carry this momentum into their regular season opener this weekend.
"There’s some good things and some bad, things but I think it’s nice to get the win," said UMD men’s hockey head coach Scott Sandelin. "I thought the guys battled hard, we got to take advantage of a couple goals, built a lead. I thought both teams had some opportunities, I mean it’s an early season game but it’s a good look."
The UMD men will drop the puck on their their home-and-home series at Bemidji State University Friday, then will host the Beavers on Saturday.
