It was a little bit longer of a wait than originally anticipated for the Wednesday Night at the Races. After last Wednesday’s event was canceled because of inclement weather, the debut was held on Wednesday night.
"It’s just great to be back after last year. This program had to be canceled due to the pandemic, so kids were left kind of without an option for a lot of this stuff, and so to see them back, running around, having smiles on their faces is really fun for us," said Grandma’s Marathon Marketing & Public Relations Director Zach Schneider.
Grandma’s Marathon and the Young Athletes Foundation hold four races around the Twin Ports throughout the summer to help keep kids active during the summer months.
Races are free and open to all children ages 14 and under. There are also adaptive and wheelchair athlete opportunities available at all locations.
Participants have the opportunity to complete either a 1/8 mile, a 1/4 mile, or a 1/2 mile course, based on their age.
Every child also receives a ribbon after finishing, and be entered in weekly prize drawings.
The next race will be held next Wednesday at Superior High School.
The rest of the summer schedule, along with locations, is listed below:
- August 11 – Superior High School
- August 18 – Hermantown High School
- August 25 – Wade Stadium (includes year-end picnic)
Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to register in advance at grandmasmarathon.com.
On-site registration is available each week starting at 5:00 p.m.
