Beyond the Playbook: Hermantown’s Taylee Manion shines on turf and ice
Plenty of high school athletes play multiple sports, but perhaps none to the degree that Hermantown’s Taylee Manion does.
For someone like Manion, she not only partakes, but excels in more than one sport.
While she’s a force to be reckoned with on the pitch, she’s somehow even more dominant on the ice.
Manion was selected for the USA Hockey Girls National 15U camp over the summer, and for good reason.
“There was a process that we had to go through,” said Manion. “It was through HP and then we went to St. Olaf for a week, and then we got selected to go to Ohio and that was a really cool experience. It was well put on. I think it was a very good opportunity. I got to see a lot of different hockey from different areas.”
Manion’s experience has not only made her a role model for some of the girls she’s playing with, but also a better teammate overall.
“Having someone in that younger age group being such a leader and such a role model, I think it’s something that’s really good for the younger girls that are looking up to her, whether they’re on JV, seeing what the potential could be,” shared Hermantown Head Girls Soccer Coach Nathan Hanson. “You can be an eighth grader playing on varsity. You can be a ninth grader playing on varsity and having that success. I think that it’s a motivating factor for them, and it really pushes them.”
Hanson added, “We have a lot of girls that play both soccer and hockey. I think one of the cool things with it is just how some of those girls already have really good chemistry, and how they have bonded in the off-season of soccer while playing hockey.”
“I think it’s great knowing that a bunch of my friends are here and to build close relationships between hockey and soccer is fun,” added Manion.
Manion’s schedule is extremely busy between both hockey and soccer practices and games. However, she makes time for both when she can.
“You’ll get a hockey game and a soccer game on the same weekend, and it really depends on how I’m doing and what I really want to do,” concluded Manion.
