Hitting the trails at Hartley

Exploring trails at Hartley Nature Center

There are a variety of mountain biking trails across Duluth, and some are more difficult than others. Hartley Park is one of the easier trails to ride on, according to Ski Hut Marketing Director Jenny Arndt.

“Hartley is the perfect place for beginner mountain bikers to learn. There’s some super mellow, fun flow terrain. And then as you kind of move up the range, they also have some more intermediate options as well,” said Arndt.

The trails at Hartley are gravel near the start and then have packed dirt with gravel mixed in.

“Specifically those beginner loops do have a little bit more of that gravel. They’re a little bit wider, two-way to allow for two way traffic and just also to kind of give you space to move,” said Arndt.

Arndt says many have been eager to go on the trails because of the frequent closures this season.

“Duluth has seen a lot of rain this year, unfortunately. We’ve had kind of a wet, long spring. Places like Hartley and other trail centers around town have been closed for the majority of what we think of as the beginning of mountain bike season,” explained Arndt.
