Tech Bytes: Senate passes online child safety bills

In today's Tech Bytes from ABC News: The senate passes two bills aimed at protecting kids safety online, Meta agrees to settle over a lawsuit in Texas, and Spotify free users can now see song lyrics.

The Senate passes major online safety legislation, which would require platforms to give teens the option to opt out of algorithms and give parents more control over how their kids’ information is used. The legislation now moves to the House, where its fate is uncertain.

Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit by Texas over facial recognition data. The parent company of Facebook was accused of violating the state’s privacy laws by collecting data from users without consent. At issue is a Facebook feature that makes suggestions for “tagging” people in photos.

People who use the free version of Spotify can now see lyrics for any song again. Earlier this year, Spotify limited free users’ access to lyrics. Now, the company is removing the cap, allowing full access to lyrics for all songs on the platform.
