Dozens of cars both classic and modern turned up August 20 for the annual Power on Tower muscle car show.

It’s put on annual by the Twin Ports Mustang and Ford Club and hosted by Superior’s Benna Ford. And while plenty of muscle cars showed up, the event welcomes cars of all kinds.

“I came over to the car show today to look at all the cars and also bring in my Volvo 1800E which is kind of a rare car for this area… certainly my Volvo isn’t a muscle car but it’s kind of unique and I find it interesting that a lot of the folks that are walking around have never seen one before so it’s a little bit different.” Said John Vigen, the Volvo’s owner.

While dozens of cars lined the lots of Benna, and plenty of people young and old gathered for the show – the evening’s event wasn’t only about the cars. Proceeds from Power on Tower went to benefit the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, or MAC-V.

“Our program is based around helping veterans that are homeless and at risk of being homeless. We step in and help them in a crisis. You know, might be helping out with paying utilities or helping pay some rent. We’ve got some other programs that may help them find a job and if you have some legal issues, we’ve got resources for that too.” Said Paul Pedersen, MAC-V’s homeless stability program manager.

For many of those showing off their cars, it’s a cause they’re more than happy to support.

“I’ve always been fighting for vets. I came back to win the Vietnam era. It’s fine. I wasn’t in Vietnam. But I came back from Vietnam era and I’ve always, I’ve always given back to my community.” Said Leonard Steltz, who brought two cars to the event, a Ford Galaxie and a Ford Falcon.

For John Vigen, it was a great way to combine his hobby and helping vets.

“I think that’s the perfect idea. People pay an entry fee, and it goes to a good cause, and everybody wins.”

MAC-V is a nonprofit that works with veterans across the state of Minnesota, with offices in several cities. Donations can be made on their website.
