Joyride offers rideshare coupons to prevent drunk driving as New Years Eve approaches
As the New Years Eve weekend begins, it is important to start planning ahead for getting a sober ride home if you are looking to go out to celebrate.
Joyride, a program that runs in the Duluth, Hermantown, Cloquet and Proctor area offers rideshare coupons up to $10 off for services like Lyft and other local taxi services.
Allison Nicolson is the injury prevention coordinator at Essentia Health, which helps run the Joyride program. She says it’s a easy four-step process. “Have your drinks like you like and run up to your bartender and say, I feel like I would like a a joy ride.” The bartender will then give you a ticket, which you then take with you as you’re about to leave, with the cab or Lyft driver redeeming the ticket when you get picked up.
Joyride is funded in part through several grants including from the Office of Traffic Safety and their Towards Zero Deaths program.
As New Years Eve celebrations begin and many planning to go out to have celebratory drinks, it is important to make sure plans for sober rides are put in place. Joyride states one in seven Minnesota drivers has a DWI on their record, with half of those drivers likely to re-offend. Additionally, Nicolson states southern St. Louis and Carlton counties have seen a severe uptick in impaired driving, leading to the importance of the sober ride options like Joyride.
“So we just we know people are enjoying the new year. So we want to make sure that that they get home safely. We want to support the Toward Zero Deaths initiative. And that means everyone can be happy and celebrating the new year, but getting home safely” Nicolson says.
