Now open at the Tweed Museum of Art, Ethan Schurman’s ‘Sonder’ exhibition explores they word of animation in a project that took him thousands of hours to complete.

The exhibit focuses around a 7 minute short film created solely by Ethan. It’s a mixture of stylized footage and animation, something that Ethan is very passionate about.

Sonder is a film that’s heavily influenced by Dungeons & Dragons and its theme revolves around the idea of the realization that each passerby has a life as complex and vivid as our own.

All of the characters were animated by Ethan but their ideas came from with D&D groups he plays in. He had the idea of turning the characters, who were just a short description and stats, into fully fleshed out animated beings.

And animation is a very difficult task. Ethan explains saying, “This film has about eight animated scenes. A lot just goes into it where every camera angle, character, color has to be added in by the artist. It was a lot to get done in just nine months and especially being one person.”
