An exclusive look behind the scenes of ‘9 To 5 The Musical’
The Duluth Playhouse’s production of ‘9 To 5’, directed by Ann Bergeron, is currently playing at the NorShor theatre and marks the last mainstage production of their 2023-2024 season.
The musical is an adaptation of the Dolly Parton film where three women make their way through their daily 9 to 5 lives in the office, when things change. They accidentally poison their boss, kidnap him, and take over the company for the better.
You can find tickets online on Duluth Playhouse’s website.
The show focuses on equality in the work place with Violet, Judy, and Doralee being the three leads of the musical. Jen Burleigh-Bentz, Alyson Enderle, and Haley Methner all play the respected roles.
Even though the story seems simple, the musical is anything but, with tons of choreography, quick changes, and scene transitions that happen in the blink of an eye.
“You’re just never stopping,” says Jen Burleigh-Bentz, “I swear the show is amazing and it’s fun and it moves quickly and that’s because of the people who are moving everything. Because we’ve got scenes that are two and a half minutes long. That’s like a movie, not normally like a stage show.”
Alyson Enderle adding on to that saying, “So [in] a lot of theater, we rely on the set to kind of build the shape and the setting for us. But our sets very open, so we rely on a lot of big pieces.”
The costumes in the show will definitely send you back to a time where typewriters were still around. Haley Methner saying that she feels totally “Dollyfied” when she puts on her Doralee wig.
“We find ourselves connecting with that and wanting to be more ourselves, and I hope that the audience feels that too,” says Haley.
