AICHO, the American Indian Community Housing Organization, held a “Backpack Giveaway,” giving free backpacks to children. As children are heading back to school it is crucial they have their school supplies. Not every child has access to materials, and it is obvious there are some accessibility issues pertaining to some children as they are arriving back in the classroom. AICHO aims to address this with their “Backpack Giveaway.”
“Accessibility, accessibility. That is everything in our communities. It is way too hard for some children to access school supplies that they actually need. We wanted to change that and raise up funds to get children enough backpacks,” says Deanna Reder, Domestic Violence legal advocate for ACHIO.
The need for school supplies for children is not new. Children across the country in K-12 classrooms struggle greatly with access to supplies they need.
“We need and want more for these kids in our community. Indigenous and BIPOC children especially. We want to provide availability as much as possible,” says Reder.
AICHO was able to raise over $8,000 in less than three weeks and distribute over 100 backpacks to children.
