Bishop Peter Muhich, formerly of the Diocese of Duluth, dies at age 62
Bishop Peter M. Muhich, who formerly served as a priest with the Diocese of Duluth, died February 17 at the age of 62.
According to the Diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota, Muhich had announced on Ash Wednesday that he was entering hospice care for esophageal cancer.
Bishop Muhich was born in Eveleth in 1961 and served as a priest of the Diocese of Duluth from his ordination in September 1989 to his appointment by Pope Francis as Bishop of Rapid City, where he was installed in July 2020.
“We are grateful for his many years of generous and faithful service as a priest and mentor in the Diocese of Duluth,” stated Duluth Bishop Daniel Felton. “In our sorrow and grief, we pray for the repose of his soul, for consolation for his family and friends and the many people whose lives he blessed, and for our brothers and sisters in the Rapid City Diocese who were entrusted to Bishop Peter’s care. In our grief, we also look with confidence to the promise of eternal life given to us by Jesus, in the hope that Bishop Peter will share the fullness of joy for eternity in heaven.”
Bishop Felton will offer a Memorial Mass for Bishop Muhich at noon Monday, March 4, at Resurrection Parish in Eveleth.
