Family fun at Summerfest Block Party

Perfect summer night for Hermantown’s Summerfest Block party

Thuesday night featured some amazing weather as Hermantown hosted their Summerfest block party.

To kick off Hermantown Summerfest, the YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center of Hermantown held a block party Thursday evening. The free event features live music from local band Split Rox, food and refreshments, and a variety of interactive booths by community partners.

“It’s really a thank you to the community for supporting the YMCA. Without them here and their support, we wouldn’t be around,” said Membership Experience Director Brian Trettel.

In-between a fire truck and face painting, the Y sold $3 root beer floats.

“The money goes towards the Duluth Area Family YMCA’s financial assistance and scholarship program, providing access to all of our youth programs, membership, etc.,” said Director of Development Christine Paliewicz. “It’s just so that the Y can be inclusive to all people. So that regardless of your financial situation, you’re able to participate in the Y programs to make you healthier in mind, body, and spirit.”

Family-friendly activities included a bounce house, a balloon artist, and a petting zoo.  The petting zoo was one of the most popular activities and included a variety of animals such as bunnies, horses, camels, and even a kangaroo. Craig Podemski attended with his two sons to support the Cub Scouts booth.

“This area has a lot of opportunities for the summer for children, and it doesn’t just make memories, but there’s a lot of kids who don’t always get to do all the things that other kids can,” said Podemski.

Event organizers are already eager for next year.

“We do this event every single year, and it’s just a way to bring the community together and have a great time and support the Y and be together with some of our community partners,” said CEO Sara Cole. “We are lucky to work with a lot of the folks here, our partners year-round. So it’s a great chance to work with folks year-round and just figure out how to have the best possible events and activities for all the families in our community. We start talking almost as soon as this finishes about next year, and the good news is I think we just make it better every single year.”
