13 Moons Pow Wow

The Fon Du Lac Tribal and Community College hosted their 10th annual 13 Moons Pow Wow in Carlton

People gathered inside the Otter Creek Event Center at Black Bear Casino in Carlton for two days of celebration on Friday, January 17th and Saturday, January 18th.

The Fon Du Lac Tribal and Community College hosted their 10th annual 13 Moons Gichi Manidoo Giizis Pow Wow, featuring 24 drums and over 300 dancers. The term “gichi manidoo giizis” is an Ojibwe term meaning “great spirit moon.” Friday was just the warmup for the big celebration, which took place Saturday afternoon and lasted into the evening hours.

13 Moons director Phillip Savage said they typically see between “1,500 and 2,000” people come through for the event, and that it’s meant to “bring the community together and celebrate the new year.”

The next FDTCC event is their weekly “Carrying the Stickgame with us” which happens every Thursday from 5p.m. to 8p.m. at the FDTCC Gymnasium in Cloquet. A link to their calendar can be found here.
