LSC Student Success Day

LSC Student Success Day

When in college, it can be hard to get out of the day-to-day flow of classes, homework, and other hangups. That limits how much time can be spent focusing on your post-graduation goals, and more specifically, nailing down a career. At Lake Superior College, they have a solution.

Twice a school year, they host “Student Success Day,” where students can make a plan of attack for the day to gain as much valuable information about the options at their disposal. The event runs all day, with larger learning sessions along with booths for local employers and LSC clubs. Some of the booths were even manned by former students, who can be role models for current ones who are seeking direction.

“We have students who graduated here, they go off into their careers, they’re successful, and then they come back and table and talk to our students. And I think sometimes that’s the best way that they can interact with our students because they can show that I came here, I graduated from here, I’m successful and it’s what you can do too,” said LSC Director of Tutoring Nicola Scott.

Even current students have an impact on their peers, like Fire Club President and Duluth Firefighter Ava Krizaj, who emphasized the importance of events like these for her club and career field.

“It’s a great way to get people interested in the fire service and our program. we get a lot of people that walk by that don’t really know what they want to do. They see us in our gear, they see our tools, they see the rig, and we get a lot of ‘I didn’t even know that was a thing I could go into, I didn’t know that was a part of LSC,’ so it’s a good way for us to get students interested and hopefully some these students will be with us next fall,” said Krizaj.

Along with the career focused portion of Student Success Day, there were some fun activities for students as well. The Blue Water Big Band played live, there was a ping-pong tournament, and also free clothing swap.

“I love student success day. Student success day is really a great day to get involved; to see the students you’ve been working with that have been working hard all year to get the best grades they can, and to do the best they can. So today is a day really dedicated to them to really focus on their success in college and outside of college as well,” said Scott.

Events like these help the students see just how many options they have, and that can be extremely valuable amidst the whirlwind that is higher education.

Lake Superior College is hosting a Career, Transfer, and Grad Fair on March 26. Their next Student Success Day will be in October.
