Ice breaking project begins Monday

Ice breaking efforts will begin soon, as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPAR plans to embark on an oil recovery exercise.

Starting Monday, March 6, the Cutter will start its track through the ice at the Duluth Harbor Entrance, proceed east, down the Superior Front Channel, to the Superior Entrance.

All snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operators, and other recreational users of the ice are asked to avoid associated shipping channels, plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice. Ice fishermen, especially, should use caution when placing their ice shacks in proximity to these shipping channels.
