Lake Superior Squadron raises money to restore historic plane
The Superior based Lake Superior Squadron is participating in a worldwide fundraising effort to support its ongoing PBY Catalina restoration project. Every year, the Commemorative Air Force’s (CAF) “12 Planes of Christmas” campaign helps raise restoration funds for many of the 175+ aircraft the CAF operates.
The Lake Superior Squadron is raising funds to restore the interior of their 1945 PBY Catalina flying boat. Their goal is to raise enough funds to cover about half of this effort. They have donors from across the US and worldwide to support the restoration of this plane which is the last PBY in service with the US Navy.
The plane is being restored to honor Lt. Howard Ady and crew, who sighted Japanese carriers attacking at Midway Island.
People can help support this restoration by visiting their website or by going to their fundraiser site.
The Lake Superior Squadron has been a member of the Twin Ports community since 1999 and is a part of the Commemorative Air Force, which consists of 85 units in 3 different countries.
