Over 100 veterans gather for fishing trip, cookout
Over nearly 50 boats brought out over 100 veterans out onto Lake Superior on Saturday morning, July 27, for a special fishing trip.
Vets on the Lake, an annual event, is hosted by the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), a nonprofit working to end Veteran homelessness, in conjunction with the Western Lake Superior Trollers Association.
120 veterans, 60 from Minnesota and 60 from Wisconsin, set off from Barker’s Island at 6:30 a.m. for the day’s fishing. For some, it was their first time on the lake.
“Our vets, a couple of them, both hadn’t been on Lake Superior. So that was really neat to share. One of the highlights I enjoy is when somebody hasn’t been.” Said Paul Pederson, who serves both as a Housing and Stability Program Manager with MACV, as well as a board member of the Trolling Association.
After the day’s fishing, a fish fry was held for the participants using the day’s catch.
