The first Ojibwe Horse Club event will take place on Tuesday, July 30th. The event is hosted by Native Wise LLC, AICHO, and the Sawyer Community Center – and will take place from 11AM to 2PM.

“Tomorrow we’re going to have our first Ojibwe Club, Horse Club meeting. And we’re trying to reintroduce our tribal community to the Ojibwe Spirit Horse, which almost went extinct in the 1970s. There’s only a couple hundred of them left today, and we’re trying to start a foundation breed here in the U.S. So, this is the beginnings of that,” said David Wise, co-founder of Native Wise LLC.

For the Ojibwe…the connection between them and the Spirit Horse is more than just horse and rider. David and Patra Wise have been working for the past few years to create a foundation bloodline for the Spirit Horse.

“And the tribal community really welcomed them with open arms, and it’s nice to have them back. We think of them as a relative, a relative coming home again,” said Wise.

For many, the club event will be a brand-new experience. Tuesday’s event will host a professional horse trainer who will teach attendees about the Spirit horse, along with horsemanship.

Patra Wise will also provide native Ojibwe food for visitors and local elders will be placing a blessing over the horses and attendees.

“A lot of people really interested, and a lot of people didn’t really know that we had ojibwe horses. You know, it’s kind of been a well-kept secret for a long time, so it’s nice to have them back in the area and be able to work with them again,” said Wise.

The Ojibwe Horse Club hopes to link history to the present and rekindle a bond unlike any other.

Tuesday’s event is open to everyone and will take place at 4020 Kari rd. Sawyer, Mn 55780.
