Fresh off their sold-out New Year’s Eve performance, Rubber Chicken Theater keeps the eggnog flowing with a brand-new holiday sketch comedy revue. Christmas Aquarium in January, or, Jokin’ in a Fishy Wonderland will be staged January 20-21 and 27-28 at 7:30pm at the Great Lakes Aquarium. Tickets are $20 per person. There is an additional charge for parking, although Great Lakes Aquarium members park for free. There will also be beer, wine, and revue-themed drinks available for purchase. (Tip: The show is much more entertaining after a couple of Sturgeon Touch Tanks.)
Christmas Aquarium in January, or, Jokin’ in a Fishy Wonderland is the traditional year-end sketch comedy show for which Rubber Chicken Theater is known, but instead of being staged in December, this winter revue will feature a longer look back at the past year with sketches and song parodies including Otter Quiet Quitting, a musical check-in to the Hotel Underwater, a peek into the clandestine meeting of the Secret League of Duluth Mayors, and The (Pert Near) Complete Minnesota Polka Challenge, featuring Steven Solkela’s Accordion-Wielding Overpopulated One-Man Orchestra.
Rubber Chicken Theater has been writing and performing sketch comedy revues ever since the group’s inception in 2008. (Rubber Chicken Theater co-founder Brian Matuszak has been creating sketch comedy revues for 35 years. That’s a lot of spit takes and mugging.) Rubber Chicken revues are local versions of Saturday Night Live and come from a long theatrical tradition started by that wacky Greek playwright Aristophanes. They feature original comedy sketches that poke fun at local, regional, and national issues.
The show is being directed by Brian Matuszak, and features the onstage talents of Jeremy Churchill, Tate Haglund-Pagel, Maria Lockwood, Kaylee Matuszak, Chris Nollet, Nathan Payne, and Joel Youngblom, along with revue newcomer Tina Makela. Linda Bray is the piano accompanist extraordinaire. Additional music provided by the aforementioned Steven Solkela.
