The Cloquet American Legion Auxiliary Unit 262 and Cloquet VFW Auxiliary Unit 3979 teamed up on Veterans Day to prepare and hand out free ham dinners to area veterans.
“It’s a good meal and they deserve to be recognized,” said Ron Stigers, Commander of Post 3979. “They did serve in combat, a lot of them. A lot of them didn’t, but they [still] served. They put their name on the line and walked that line.”
For Stigers, taking care of vets is personal, being one himself.
“I come from a family of accumulated 168 years of service to our country,” explained Stigers. “I served in Desert Storm and I’m a retired Air Force policeman, but it’s the obligation that we need to take up. Because if we don’t take it up, who’s going to?”
The units will also be doing a Thanksgiving meal and a Christmas meal this holiday season.
