Virginia woman charged in Duluth carjacking

A Virginia woman has been charged on multiple counts involving an alleged carjacking that took place in Duluth on the evening of July 8.

“A 24-year-old male was picking up food around 22:40 near W Saint Marie/Woodland Ave when 32-year-old Kristy Johnson jumps into his vehicle and starts to drive away,” explained Mattie Hjelseth, the public information officer with the Duluth Police Department. “The male attempts to get into his vehicle and is drug/run over. He was transported to a local hospital for a possible broken femur. A short time later, the vehicle was located and Johnson was arrested for multiple pending charges.”

On Thursday, July 11, Johnson was charged on six counts; Aggravated Robbery-1st Degree, Theft-Take/Use/Transfer Movable Prop-No Consent, Criminal Vehicular Operation – Substantial Bodily Harm – Gross Negligence, Criminal Vehicular Operation – Substantial Bodily Harm – Under Influence Control Substance, Criminal Vehicular Operation – Substantial Bodily Harm – Any Amount Sch 1 or 2; Not
cannabis/hemp, and Charge: Criminal Vehicular Operation – Substantial Bodily Harm – Driver Who Causes Collision Leaves Scene.

As per the Order of Detention, a search of the accused’s belongings yielded a small bag containing methamphetamine. It also states the victim sustained fractures to his femur and clavicle that required surgery.

Johnson’s next hearing will be on August 6, 2024.
