Ways to stay safe while enjoying the Fourth of July

As the Fourth of July draws near, gatherings and celebrations are becoming more prevalent.

Mattie Hjelseth – Public Information Officer of the Duluth Police Department, explains the best practices for how to enjoy the holiday safely.

Fireworks and sparklers are very popular during the summer, especially during the weeks surrounding the Fourth. Fireworks that shoot into the air are illegal in Minnesota, and even though they are legal and able to be purchased some neighboring states, they can cause safety concerns.

Fireworks, when misused, can lead to injuries, fires/property damage, and other unsafe conditions. Many pets can become startled due to the loud noise caused by fireworks and can even run off.

“We recommend to go to 4th fest, have that nice festivity and enjoy those fireworks displayed there. it’s a free event and it’s a really good firework display,” said Hjelseth.

Many people like to enjoy the Fourth of July with their friends and the presence of alcohol can pose safety risks for those partaking and those around them.

“Especially drinking and driving, make a plan before you go out. that’s a big one. We don’t want people driving drunk out on the roadways. It’s gonna be a busy time of the year for sure. So, make sure you make a plan beforehand, don’t drive drunk and just enjoy your festivities, but do it safely as well,” said Hjelseth.

Hjelseth notes tips on how to plan for drinking during the holiday.

“There’s a lot of different options within the city of Duluth, whether that’s taxis, Lyft, Uber, having a friend or designate a sober driver right before you go home. Just make that plan before going out on the roadways to ensure everybody has a safe time, but as well as just have a fun time too,” said Hjelseth.

As we all look towards the Fourth of July holiday festivities, taking care to be safe can ensure it is enjoyable for everyone.

“If you wanna see a good firework display, we’ll be out and about patrolling, making sure people stay safe,” said Hjelseth.
