Cutter SPAR icebreaking for Madeline Island Ferry
As the big salties now sail the Great Lakes, the Madeline Island Ferry is getting ready for another season.
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPAR is working in the South Channel of the Chequamegon Bay to support that ferry. The SPAR came in from the east and through the South Channel, south of Old Fort. The cutter is breaking up the ice just south of the Madeline Island Ferry Crossing to encourage deterioration. The SPAR will then stay west and south of the charted ferry route.
Madline Island officials recommend you plan activities carefully around the ice, use caution, and stay away from charted navigation areas.
