Rep. Tiffany reintroduces Justice for Murder Victims Act

Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wisconsin) and Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Georgia) have introduced the “Justice for Murder Victims Act”. According to Office for Rep. Tiffany, the bipartisan bill would strike down the “year-and-a-day” rule, a 13th century legal precedent that prohibits a defendant from being prosecuted for murder if their victim dies more than a year-and-a-day after the date of their assault.

“Justice should not come with an expiration date,” further elaborated Tiffany. “This bipartisan, bicameral legislation will provide justice for murder victims by doing away with the ‘year-and-a-day’ loophole, ensuring that murderers can be prosecuted no matter how much time has passed.”

Specifically, the “year-and-a-day” legally bars prosecution for homicide cases where the victim days more than 366 days after an attack. This bill would amend federal and make it so there’s no maximum prosecutorial time period between the assault and death of a victim.
