20th anniversary of Chicken Hat Plays
On Saturday June 24, the Chicken Hat Plays celebrated their 20th anniversary in a special way.
The play, organized by Rubber Chicken Theater, featured eight outstanding world premiere-plays all created in just 24 hours and it was held at Harbor City International School Theater.
In May 2003, eight writers, eight directors, and many actors, gathered together in downtown Duluth to create eight world-premiere plays in 24 hours. It was exhausting. It was exhilarating. It was something Northland audiences had never seen before. Since then, 311 writers, 311 directors, and nearly 1,000 actors have worked together to create 311 completely original one-act plays.
The Chicken Hat Plays have been popular with local theater artists and audiences, since the concept was introduced in 2003. Writers, directors, and actors from groups all over the Twin Ports come together, including Rubber Chicken Theater, Colder by the Lake, Renegade, UMD Theatre, St. Scholastica Theatre, UWS Theatre, County Seat Theatre, the Duluth Playhouse, the Duluth Central-Denfeld-East-Hermantown-Harbor City high school theater departments, and even artists from the Twin Cities made the trip north to take part in the fun of The Chicken Hat Plays.
