GoFundMe set for athlete who died at Inline Marathon
According to NorthShore Inline Marathon, one of the participants has passed following the 2024 marathon.
Mike Lufholm was passionate about skating and recently placed second in the Apostle Islands Inline Marathon. He had a wife and a newborn daughter.
A NorthShore Inline Marathon Facebook page post says the organization “wants to express our heartfelt gratitude to the participants on the course who came to the aid of a fellow skater, the first responders, and the medical professionals who provided medical care.”
The cause of Lufholm’s death is unknown at this time.
The Duluth Police Department provided the following statement:
“On 9/14/24 shortly after 730am, a medical was reported of a skater down in the tunnels of I-35 along the course. Officers responded to assist with other medical staff. The skater was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. There was no further involvement by the Duluth Police Department.”
A GoFundMe page has been created to help support the family as they navigate this unprecedented time.
“Our dear friend, Erin Lufholm, tragically lost her husband, Mike Lufholm, on September 14th. He passed away suddenly while competing in the 2024 Northshore Inline Marathon in Duluth. Skating was a passion that brought him so much happiness.”
