Backpacker dies hiking at Isle Royale National Park

A Battle Creek, Michigan woman has died while hiking near Lake LeSage at Isle Royale National Park, according to park officials. Officials say the 37-year-old woman was hiking with her partner when she began to have a medical emergency.

According to a report from Park officials, the woman’s condition deteriorated and eventually she was unable to walk. She lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Other backpackers in the area contacted Michigan State Police. CPR was provided but attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

Park ranger/EMTs located and stayed with the party Monday evening and a crew of Isle Royale staff arrived on Tuesday morning to transport the group from the area.

An investigation is ongoing. The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of family.
