The 40th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has been canceled. It will not happen as it usually does the last weekend of January, but is planned to return in 2025.
The race’s board of directors decided Tuesday night to cancel.
Poor snow conditions across the Arrowhead of Minnesota led to the decision. The 300-mile marathon course runs from Duluth to Grand Portage, but the conditions were deemed unsafe for the dogs.
The Gunflint Mail Run, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 6, was also postponed to Feb. 10.
