Bird flu found in Burnett Co. flock
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture said Thursday that highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a poultry flock in Burnett County.
Officials said no birds or poultry products will be enter the food system from that flock, and “birds on the property were depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease.”
The H5N1 HPAI virus has been circulating in the U.S. since December 2021.
“The disease can be spread by contact with infected birds, commingling with wild birds or their droppings, equipment, or clothing worn by anyone working with the animals,” the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection said.
Livestock owners are encouraged to put in biosecurity measures, including: washing hands, disinfecting equipment, restricting access to animals, and separating new additions to the flock or herd for at least 30 days. If possible, owners should also keep birds indoors.
The CDC say avian influenza does not pose a risk to humans.
