Body of missing canoeist found just west of Curtain Falls

Authorities have located the body of the second missing canoeist who went over Curtain Falls, between Crooked Lake and Iron Lake on the Minnesota-Ontario border on May 18. According the the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the body of Reis Melvin Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes, Minn. was located Monday, June 3.

According to a release, Reis Grams was found shortly after 10:00 a.m. Search crews located Grams just west of the Curtain Falls in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Louis County Rescue squad had been searching for the canoists for nearly two weeks.

Grams was flown by plane to the Ely Sea Plane Base in Ely, Minn.

All missing persons have been located.

On Friday, May 31, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad located the body of Jesse Melvin Haugen, 41, of Cambridge, MN.

The two men were part of a group of five in two canoes. According to initial reports from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, two canoes went over the falls. Two of the men were later rescued, and a third was found at a nearby campsite.
