For the past few years there have been plenty of changes to Brighton Beach due to the erosion along the lake shore. Officials with the Duluth Parks and Recreations said the Brighton Beach reconstruction will finish by the end of 2024.

Cliff Knetel, the assistant manager of Duluth parks and recreation, said there are several new additions to Brighton Beach.

“Last year we began the park restoration. So kind of doing some reconfiguring of some of the usable spaces, adding some new amenities, new restrooms,” Knetel said. “Our crews are installing benches, picnic tables, grills and garbage receptacles. Most of that work will be done by the end of the month.”

However, there have been some concerns about the City of Duluth removing native plants for a new roadway. Knetel said the city will still replant trees and other flowers.

“Then the last major component is the street. The public access to Brighton Beach from London Road and Highway 61. That is an engineering department led project,” Knetel said. “That is starting very soon and that will be completed by the end of the year.”

Jake Bendel, the project manager with Northern Ecological Services said people need to stay away from roped off areas at Brighton Beach.

“Have patience while we’re working on this. There’s a lot of moving parts,“ Bendel said. “There’s a lot of bigger rocks. They’re like pinned in with steel and stuff so they can’t move by the lake. Some different fancier designs to try to build a robust shoreline but also have a natural green space. There’s a lot of plant roots holding everything together.”
