A campfire in the BWCA. (WDIO)
Do you find yourself daydreaming of sitting by a fire, sipping coffee while listening to the loons call to one another? The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is calling your name.
BWCAW permit reservations for the 2025 season go on sale at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29. Those interested in booking a site should make their reservations online at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777.
The Forest Service has some helpful tips to make the process less stressful.
- Have a few dates and entry points in mind in case your preferred location is unavailable.
Everyone is asked to only reserve what you plan to use. - Know where and when you are going before making a reservation. Make a plan and know the limits for number of people in your party, etc.
- Permits are not transferable. The permit holder, alternates, entry date and entry point cannot be changed once the reservation has been made. Alternate names should be added when the reservation is being made. They cannot be added later.
- If your plans change, cancel right away to allow others to book that destination.
Registration is open Wednesday, January 29 through Tuesday, September 30. It is important to note, that campsites and entry points do fill up.
Visitors taking an overnight paddle, overnight motor, overnight hiking trip, or a motorized day trip into the BWCAW between May and September are required to obtain a quota permit.
The Forest Service says permit holders are limited to one permit per day, and the Forest Service may cancel multiple same day, overlapping, and consecutive reservations under the same permit holder name.
