Celebrate National Farmers’ Market week in Lincoln Park
Folks across the country are celebrating National Farmers’ Market Week which runs Monday, August 6 through Saturday, August 12.
National Farmers’ Market week celebrates the vital role that farmers markets play in the nation’s food system. Lincoln Park was selected to represent the State of Minnesota in the celebration.
Kayla Pridmore with Community Action Duluth says, one of the issues residents face is being in a food desert. Which means it can be hard for people buy healthy nutritious food. But thanks to local efforts Lincoln park’s farmers market continues to offer fresh produce to the neighborhood.
“We utilize a lot of different federal funding and some partners with different organizations around town that help us stretch people’s EBT dollars. So when you come to the market with $15 on your EBT card you actually get $40 to spend with our farmers and vendors. There’s a lot of barriers people are facing to food access,” Pridmore said. “It might be transportation, it might be mobility, it’s numerous different things that people are facing. So we try and meet people where they’re at.”
Pridmore also says there’s a community mobile market they operate in Lincoln Park. It’s a grocery store on wheels that offers delivery to folks who are struggling.
If anyone is under 18 years old, or over the age of 60 the Lincoln park farmers market provides those folks with $4 to spend on fresh produce.
