Challenge Center growing their greenhouse with flowers this spring

Challenge Center is growing their greenhouse with more than fresh vegetables, they're be growing flowers this spring season for Mother's Day.

The Challenge Center is growing their Bay Produce program with more than fresh vegetables. New this year, the non-profit will be adding spring flowers to their greenhouse and they’ll be ready for Mother’s Day.

Mark Kroll, the Director of the Challenge Center, says their Bay Produce program helps individuals learn pre-vocational skills.

“It’s a way for us to kind of change up our business model a little bit. We’ve been doing vegetables, great tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, and different things throughout the years. It’s an opportunity for us to just diversify a little bit,” Kroll said. “Have something that we don’t, and connect with the public.”

Kroll also said with Challenge Center growing flowers it would provide new learning opportunities for some of their growers with learning disabilities.

“The mission of the Challenge Center is to help those in our community facing difficulties. Finding work and living independently. Folks that we serve can come to learn the skills that it takes to work in a greater community,” Kroll said. “We’re always advancing, we’re always growing, and one of the ways that we’re growing is growing flowers. Having bedding plants and hanging plants and porch pots is a great opportunity for our folks that we serve. Also [they] interact with the people that ultimately are going to come and buy these flowers.”
