Charges filed after Greysolon incident
Formal charges have been filed against the man with the sword at Greysolon Ballroom last week.
Alexander Dougherty, 33, has been charged with 2nd Degree Attempted Murder and 1st Degree Assault-Use of deadly force against a peace officer, after stabbing an officer in the chest.
According to the criminal complaint, Dougherty barricaded himself inside an apartment on the 8th floor of Greysolon Plaza. Law enforcement attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender, but Dougherty refused to comply. Officers could hear him yelling, growling, and screaming within the apartment, while also threatening to “cut people up.” The criminal complaint says Dougherty “screamed at officers to shoot him.”
After hours of negotiation, police went into the apartment by tactical entry. The criminal complaint says Dougherty then “wielded a samurai-like sword, lunged and stabbed an officer in the chest.” The officer was wearing a protective vest, which stopped the sword. The officer’s hand was cut during the altercation.
Dougherty was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and mental evaluation.
Charges also include Threats of Violence-Reckless Disregard Risk, Obstruct Legal Process-Lawful Execution Legal Process, and 4th Degree Assault of a Peace Officer.
